Island History
A historical, chronological, sociological, familiological look at years past.
Lucy and Bill Andrus first visited Bell Island in 1927, bringing along their six-month old baby girl, Peggy Andrus. At that time the Island was owned by the Professor Adams (Yale) and family. Dr. Adams' daughter Ruth was a friend of Ruth Andrus, a.k.a. Aunt Sis. They returned for several summers, and asked the Adams to let them know if they ever wanted to sell the Island. In 1934, during the Great Depression, the Adams did decide to sell. Lucy and Bill bought the Island from them for $5,000 (about the equivalent of $80,000 in today's dollars). And the rest is history...
